Hi! I am Gundeep Sekhon, M.D.!
A triple board-certified psychiatrist with over a decade of experience helping individuals navigate their mental health journeys. My path in medicine has been shaped by a rich tapestry of experiences across continents and cultures, allowing me to blend Eastern and Western healing practices in my approach to care.
My Professional Journey
I began my medical education at the Government Medical College in Amritsar, Punjab, India, where I was deeply influenced by my parents—both physicians—who instilled in me a profound dedication to patient care and service.
Eager to expand my horizons, I moved to the United States to pursue advanced training. I completed my psychiatry residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and further specialized with a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at Stanford University Hospitals.
Throughout my career, I've worked in diverse settings, from inpatient and outpatient care to partial hospitalization programs.
One of the most impactful experiences was providing psychiatric care to incarcerated individuals on death row, which offered invaluable insights into the complexities of mental health in challenging environments.
My commitment to holistic health led me to obtain board certification in Obesity Medicine and pursue additional training in Integrative Psychiatry through the Dream Practice Academy. These experiences have equipped me to address not just the mind, but the body and spirit as well.
What Inspires My Practice
My passion for psychiatry was ignited in medical school, driven by a desire to uncover the root causes of symptoms that standard tests couldn't explain. Personal experiences have also deeply shaped my approach. I've navigated challenges such as performance anxiety, infertility, pregnancy loss, divorce, and postpartum depression. These journeys have heightened my sensitivity to grief and loss and reinforced the importance of lifestyle balance, self-care, and compassionate support.
A Glimpse Into My Life
Outside of my professional life, I'm a grateful mother to a spirited preschooler and a loyal five-year-old German Shepherd, both of whom keep me active and grounded.
I have a deep passion for travel and history, with a particular love for exploring historical architecture around the world. Whether wandering through the forts in India, the ancient ruins of Rome, Borobudur in Indonesia, Persepolis in Iran, Aboriginal nation in Australia, the Okavango in Botswana or the vibrant streets of Colombia, I find joy in immersing myself in different cultures.
I'm also an avid bird enthusiast and find peace spending time outdoors, where the melodies of nature offer a tranquil retreat. Historical fiction audiobooks are my constant companions, fueling my love for stories that bridge the past and present. As a lifelong learner and seeker, I'm always eager to engage in meaningful conversations that broaden my perspectives.
My Philosophy
I believe that true healing occurs when our mind, body, and soul are in alignment. I sincerely believe that by integrating modern medicine with cultural wisdom and personal values, we can empower ourselves to reach our highest potential in health and well-being. My role is to guide you on this journey, offering a compassionate, open-minded partnership that respects your unique story and background.
If you're seeking a holistic approach to mental health that honors every facet of who you are, I'm here to support you every step of the way.
